If you're planning a trip to Lake OconeeĀ and considering a stay at North Shore Landing ā a KOA campground, weāve got the scoop on what to expect, what to explore, and a few things we wishĀ we knew beforehand.
We rolled in during early spring, and while the lake was beautiful, the chilly breeze didnāt exactly scream ābeach day.ā The pool sat still, the paddleboards stayed racked, and even our dogs gave us a side-eye when we suggested a walk along the shore. But hey ā RV life isnāt always sunshine and swimsuits.
This stop may not have a long checklist of entertainment, but if you like quiet mornings on the water and discovering small-town charm, itās got some hidden gems. So, hereās what we didĀ find ā and what we wish we had known sooner.
š The Stops
North Shore Landing KOAĀ is a smaller park nestled right along Lake Oconee, giving you that peaceful lakeside setting with minimal distractions ā in both good and limited ways. Sites are fairly close, but the lakefront views are worth it.
š§ The Stories
We used our time here to slow down, unplug a bit, and check out the nearby towns. One rainy day led us into Greensboro, and thatās where things started to pick up.
Greensboroās Downtown SquareĀ ā Itās got that small-town southern charm, and the antebellum architectureĀ feels like stepping back in time.
Antique Shops & Local BitesĀ ā Greensboro had more than a few cozy spots to poke around in, from old record finds to quirky vintage tools.
The Old Gaol (Jail)Ā ā Yeah, we missed this one the first time! The Old GaolĀ is one of the oldest penal structures in Georgia. Definitely worth a look if youāre into local history and weird little finds.
The Town of MadisonĀ ā About 25 minutes from Lake Oconee, Madison is another must-visit for fans of historic southern homesĀ and gracious streetscapes. Itās postcard-worthy.
Oconee National ForestĀ ā If youāre itching for a hike, the trails here are peaceful and well-marked. Itās not Yellowstone, but itās a lovely escape into the woods.
š§ The Stuff We Wish We Knew
The lake and pool are better suited for warmer weather. Donāt expect spring swimming unless you're a polar bear.
Weād recommend planning your trip around local events or warmer seasonsĀ to really enjoy the outdoor activities.
Thereās not a lot of nightlife or indoor attractions nearby ā bring your own fun (games, good books, maybe a bottle of wine).
Madison was a surprise hit. We shouldāve gone earlier and spent more time there.
