🌊 Lake Oconee KOA & North Shore Landing, Georgia

by WorriesEmpty

If you're planning a trip to Lake OconeeĀ and considering a stay at North Shore Landing – a KOA campground, we’ve got the scoop on what to expect, what to explore, and a few things we wishĀ we knew beforehand.

We rolled in during early spring, and while the lake was beautiful, the chilly breeze didn’t exactly scream ā€œbeach day.ā€ The pool sat still, the paddleboards stayed racked, and even our dogs gave us a side-eye when we suggested a walk along the shore. But hey — RV life isn’t always sunshine and swimsuits.

This stop may not have a long checklist of entertainment, but if you like quiet mornings on the water and discovering small-town charm, it’s got some hidden gems. So, here’s what we didĀ find — and what we wish we had known sooner.

🚐 The Stops

North Shore Landing KOAĀ is a smaller park nestled right along Lake Oconee, giving you that peaceful lakeside setting with minimal distractions — in both good and limited ways. Sites are fairly close, but the lakefront views are worth it.

🧭 The Stories

We used our time here to slow down, unplug a bit, and check out the nearby towns. One rainy day led us into Greensboro, and that’s where things started to pick up.

  1. Greensboro’s Downtown Square – It’s got that small-town southern charm, and the antebellum architectureĀ feels like stepping back in time.

  2. Antique Shops & Local Bites – Greensboro had more than a few cozy spots to poke around in, from old record finds to quirky vintage tools.

  3. The Old Gaol (Jail) – Yeah, we missed this one the first time! The Old GaolĀ is one of the oldest penal structures in Georgia. Definitely worth a look if you’re into local history and weird little finds.

  4. The Town of Madison – About 25 minutes from Lake Oconee, Madison is another must-visit for fans of historic southern homesĀ and gracious streetscapes. It’s postcard-worthy.

  5. Oconee National Forest – If you’re itching for a hike, the trails here are peaceful and well-marked. It’s not Yellowstone, but it’s a lovely escape into the woods.

🧠 The Stuff We Wish We Knew

  • The lake and pool are better suited for warmer weather. Don’t expect spring swimming unless you're a polar bear.

  • We’d recommend planning your trip around local events or warmer seasonsĀ to really enjoy the outdoor activities.

  • There’s not a lot of nightlife or indoor attractions nearby — bring your own fun (games, good books, maybe a bottle of wine).

  • Madison was a surprise hit. We should’ve gone earlier and spent more time there.
