Surviving Florida's Winter: Tips for RVers

Updated: Feb 17

Florida, known as the Sunshine State, is a fantastic place for us to winter. But what happens when winter decides to show up while we're here? Expecting sunshine, it can be quite a shock when the temperature drops below 35°F, and the wind chill feels like it's in the teens!

I like to say that "anything under 70 degrees is Florida cold." I even throw in a few jokes, like, "That's when we have to put pants on!" or "Yep, then we know we have to trade our flip-flops for shoes!"

But seriously, there are a few things we consider when caught in the middle of record low temperatures. Let’s dive into some practical tips to keep warm and cozy during those unexpected cold snaps!

Stock Up on Propane

First things first: we get propane! Yep, we have three 30-pound tanks, and keeping them all full helps us stay warm. Plus, having them full means I don’t have to trek outside in the cold to change out an empty tank. I can keep two connected at the same time, which is a real lifesaver!

Protect Your Plants

Next up, we have to cover our plants. Typically, I just use a blanket to keep them a little warmer than the outside air. It’s a simple trick but can make a huge difference!

Switch to Internal Fresh Water Tanks

Now, we should switch over to our internal fresh water tanks. In this instance, we didn’t, but by doing so, we wouldn’t have to worry about the external water connections freezing. It’s a smart move for anyone facing chilly weather!

Embrace the Chill

While it’s easy to grumble about the cold, I find it’s also a great opportunity to embrace the chill! We can cozy up inside our RV with a warm drink, maybe some hot cocoa or spiced cider. It’s a perfect time to catch up on reading or binge-watch our favorite shows.

Plan Indoor Activities

When the weather outside is frightful, it’s time to get creative! Plan some indoor activities. Maybe host a game night with fellow RVers or dive into a new craft project. The possibilities are endless, and it’s a great way to bond with friends and family.

Stay Informed

Keeping an eye on the weather forecast is crucial. We always check the local news or weather apps to stay updated on any sudden changes. Being prepared can make all the difference!

Look Forward to Sunshine

We know that in just a few weeks, we’ll have our normal Florida sunshine back, and all will be right in the world again! Until then, we’ll take it one day at a time, making the most of our time here, even if it’s a bit chillier than we’d like.

So, whether you're an experienced RVer or just starting your journey, remember that winter in Florida can be unpredictable. But with a little preparation and a positive attitude, we can weather any storm together!
