We even spotted a climber scaling the massive rock columns above us. Standing outside this cottage is a section of the largest redwood tree ever known to have grown in Mendocino County, dedicated in 1945 by the citizens of Fort Bragg. The plaque honors Charles Russell Johnson, who founded the city on August 5, 1889. Behind that plaque sits a guest cottage built in 1892, later designated a California Point of Historical Interest.
